Overview

Corn Gluten contains 100% corn gluten meal, a naturally occurring substance, which inhibits the growth of a seed's tiny feeder roots. This causes the seedlings to die before they germinate. Since most weeds germinate by seed corn gluten will kill the seeds before they sprout.

Corn Gluten meal fertilizer offers a non-toxic, yet effective alternative to chemical-based weed and feed products for weed control in lawns and gardens.

Features & Benefits:

  • Organic fertilizer feeds lawns naturally
  • Helps build strong turf
  • Use for pre-emergent weed control
  • Apply by hand or using a spreader
  • Safe and environmentally friendly
  • Meets National Organic Program standards
  • Made in the USA

Corn Gluten as Fertilizer

As a plant food, corn gluten organic fertilizer has a N-P-K ratio of 8-0-0. It will fertilize your lawn, and prevent the growth of new weeds. Because it prevents seeds from sprouting, make sure you wait 60 days after application before spreading grass seed. Corn Gluten can also be used to fertilize shrubs and transplants. As a fertilizer, corn gluten can be applied at any time of year. The nitrogen releases slowly over a 3-4 month period after application.

Guaranteed Analysis:

Total Nitrogen (N): 8%. Water-insoluble nitrogen: 7%. Nutrients for this product are derived from 100% Non-GMO Corn Gluten Meal, and contain no animal manure or fillers.

To Prevent Weed Growth:

As a weed suppressant, corn gluten acts as a natural "pre-emergent" - it inhibits seed germination by drying out a seed as soon as it begins to sprout. These qualities make corn gluten an ideal 'weed n feed' product.

To take advantage of its weed-prevention properties, corn gluten must be applied before weed seeds germinate. Apply in early spring before the weeds begin to sprout, as a general rule, around the time when the forsythia, daffodils and early spring bulbs are blooming. For maximum weed control, we recommend a spring, mid-summer and fall application.

Corn gluten fertilizer is also useful when transplanting vegetables and shrubs. Apply immediately after transplanting to prevent weeds from sprouting through the enriched soil and competing with your transplants.

Corn Gluten controls common broadleaf weeds:

  • Dandelions, Barnyardgrass, Curly Dock, Green Foxtail, Orchardgrass, Shattercane, Purslane, Wooly Cupgrass, Giant Foxtail, Lamb's Quarters, Buckhorn Plantain, Quackgrass, Crabgrass, Velvetleaf, Annual Bluegrass, Creeping Bentgrass, Black Nightshade, Black Medic, Redroot Pigweed, Catchweed Bedstraw, Clover, and more

Safe for people and pets

Our Certified Organic Corn Gluten Meal is derived from 100% Non-GMO corn where no commercial fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides are applied. No neonicotinoids. People and pets can use the lawn immediately after application. It will not harm beneficial insects, soil organisms, ponds or stream life.

How To Use:

Initial treatment: Apply 20 lbs per 1,000 square feet of lawn, garden or flowerbed area. Subsequent treatments: Apply 30 lbs per 5,000 square feet. Apply up to 500 lbs per acre for commercial farming use. For best results, apply twice a year in spring and fall. If using for pre-emergent weed control, the timing of the spring application is important. When applying corn gluten in the fall, do before winter annuals emerge, and in the spring before winter annuals come out of dormancy and to treat the summer annuals that will begin to emerge. For best results, apply in the spring, mid-summer and fall.

Corn gluten lawn fertilizer can be broadcast by hand or using a spreader. You can use a drop spreader or a broadcast spreader for lighter applications.

When applying, we find that the early morning or evening works best so the dew or moisture from the night air can help start a slow break down. You can apply before rainfall, but avoid applying if heavy storms are in the forecast (heavy rain/wind risks washing it away). This helps create a slow breakdown, which helps keep corn gluten in its place. If it does not rain within 48 hours of application, water it in with approximately 1/4 inch of water, or water lawn with a soaking type rainfall.

*please note we previously recommended a 24-48 hour drying period after application, but after years of analysis, applying before a light rain shower is fine and will still contribute to a slow breakdown.

Notes on Use from Dr. Nick Christians at Iowa State University:

Corn gluten meal fertilizer works by inhibiting the root formation of germinating plants. It generally does not inhibit the roots of mature plants or transplants until you reach very high rates (80 pounds/1000 square feet or higher). It should be applied before germination of the weeds. The weed will germinate and usually forms a shoot, but does not form a root. After germination, a short drying period is needed to kill the plants that have germinated but have not formed a root. Timing is critical. If it is too wet during germination, the plants will recover and form a root (this is also true of chemical pre-emergent herbicides).

As a pre-emergent, corn gluten fertilizer will remain effective for 5-6 weeks following germination.

Corn gluten does not work well with seeded garden crops unless they are seeded deeply. Transplants or mature plants generally work well. Some growers put down a band, work it into the upper inch of soil, and then put the transplant in the band.

In garden and crop production, growers generally work out their own system, depending on their understanding of the crop they are growing and the weeds they are trying to control.

Been using corn meal gluten for three years.

Works great. Hoping I have continued results. Spring has been tricky this year and picking the correct time to apply the gluten determines how well it works. No matter the results... it will always be my choice to use because I would rather use a safe product and not hire a company that uses toxic ways to fertilize and get rid of weeds.

Mareials inside bag were moist; some clumping

I have previously purchased this product from a different vendor. I liked your price better. The bag you sent it in also seemed better quality than the more expensive vendor. That means the moisture was there when bag was packed. Could not use broadcast spreader due to clumping. Please fix this in the future. Had to spread by hand and broke up clumping.

Organic is the way to go

This is the first time I purchased this product from Earth Easy, but I used this same product in the past from other companies, and it seems to help with the unwanted weeds.
